Car clearcoat: choose the right finish and components

Clearcoat provides the transparent finishing layer in many refinishing systems. Choose it according to the paint beneath, the required gloss level and application conditions. Send SIC Refinish your current product reference or job details to arrange a supply enquiry.

1K and 2K: check the complete system

The terms 1K and 2K distinguish one-component and two-component systems. A 2K clearcoat needs the hardener specified by its manufacturer. Do not choose a hardener merely because it shares a brand name or comes in a similar container.

The mixing ratio, use of thinner and pot life belong to the technical data sheet for that particular reference. There is no universal ratio suitable for every clearcoat. Before buying, identify the complete combination you will prepare.

Gloss, matt or satin

The finish must match the intended job. A partial repair to a matt surface needs a different process from a high-gloss panel. State the original finish and whether the work covers an entire panel or a smaller area.

Do not assume polishing can achieve any desired gloss level. Follow the system instructions and test the result before working on the panel. Review the gloss level and application together with the bodyshop.

Compare the complete package, not just the tin price

A tin of clearcoat and a kit containing hardener are different purchases. When comparing quotations, check each component's quantity and reference, plus any extra materials needed. A kit's total volume does not automatically mean that many litres of base clearcoat.

For a repeat order, send a readable label photograph and the hardener reference. Include the job size and planned drying conditions. The technical and safety data sheets determine the process and protective measures; this page helps you prepare the order.

Example: comparing two car clear coat offers

  1. Suppose one offer contains one litre of clear coat and another contains one litre of clear coat plus half a litre of hardener. Their contents differ, even if both highlight “1 litre” in the title.
  2. Record the clear coat volume, hardener and any other included component separately. This example compares pack contents; it does not prescribe a mixing ratio.
  3. Check whether the references are for the same finish and process. A complete kit from another system is not automatically a substitute for the one the workshop uses.
  4. Compare the cost of completing the job with the components you are missing, including tax and delivery. If a required reference is absent, request the complete quotation before deciding.

Your questions answered

Can 2K clearcoat be used over any paint?

Do not assume so. Check the permitted basecoats, preparation and recoating times in the manufacturer's instructions.

Is hardener included?

That depends on the pack. Confirm whether the quotation covers clearcoat alone or a kit, and the quantities of each component.

How much clearcoat does a car need?

It depends on the surface area, product and application process. State the panels and system; the bodyshop should calculate consumption using the coverage in the technical data sheet.
