The term flame-resistant alone is not enough to choose a garment for a job. Selection must start with identified risks and the equipment's documented performance. Spain's INSST provides a selection and use sheet for clothing protecting against heat and flame.
Start with the workplace assessment
Share the tasks and exposure conditions with the person responsible for workplace prevention. Do not infer the required protection simply from working in a workshop or industrial setting; requirements can vary by role.
Review the garment documentation
Check markings, declared performance and the manufacturer's instructions for use, care and compatibility. Documentation must match the specific reference. Garments do not all offer the same performance, and every feature is not needed for every job.
Ask before customising
If you need to add a logo, ask for compatibility with the manufacturer's instructions to be reviewed before modifying the garment.
Organise the documentation before comparing garments
INSST technical note NTP 1171 explains identification, performance and instructions. Create a folder for each reference and check that the label, data sheet and instructions describe the same garment. A sheet for another variant can lead to comparing different equipment.
| What to keep | What to clarify if missing |
|---|---|
| Label photograph and reference | Which version will be supplied. |
| Job requirement provided by the safety team | Which exposure the selection addresses. |
| Manufacturer’s instructions and documentation | How to use, combine and maintain the garment. |
| Customisation proposal | Whether that design and position are compatible with the equipment. |
Example: two proposals you cannot compare yet
Offer A identifies the garment and includes its documentation; offer B only says “flame-resistant jacket with logo”. Even if B is cheaper, information is missing to establish whether it meets the same need. Ask for the reference and documentation before comparing prices or approving customisation.
Also record who reviewed the proposal and which questions were resolved. This record organises purchasing; selection of the protection still depends on the workplace assessment. Do not test resistance by bringing the garment close to a flame.
Prepare your SIC Refinish enquiry
Provide the specified job requirements, sizes, quantities and required lead time. Our team can review references and documentation before confirming a proposal. Enquire about protective clothing.
